The Rumah Singgah retirement home is designed around the philosophy of aging in place, integrating comfort, dignity, and sustainability into one cohesive midrise living environment. This project reimagines elderly care through thoughtful architecture that promotes independence while supporting health and community engagement. Taking inspiration from the term "rumah singgah"—a comforting, temporary stop—the design emphasizes a warm, nurturing atmosphere where seniors can continue living actively in a secure environment. The structure rises seven storeys, with clear vertical zoning to separate private and communal functions. Public and healthcare amenities are placed on lower floors, while upper levels are dedicated to residential units that are adaptable, accessible, and filled with natural light. What sets this design apart is the integration of a permaculture-inspired therapeutic garden woven throughout the site. From edible landscapes and sensory herb trails to shaded walkways and raised planters, the garden is not just decorative—it’s a living ecosystem that promotes physical activity, mental stimulation, and social interaction. Residents can participate in light gardening, harvesting fruits and herbs, or simply enjoy the view from shaded benches, all of which encourage a sense of purpose and connection with nature. The garden is carefully integrated across multiple levels—at the podium, ground floor, and rooftop—ensuring visibility and access from different spaces. This biophilic approach also supports better air quality, passive cooling, and rainwater management. Garden pathways double as exercise trails, while pond and insect-friendly zones support biodiversity and promote environmental awareness among residents. Three main lifts and one fire-rated lift ensure safe and inclusive circulation, with all floors designed for barrier-free access. Passive design strategies—like cross ventilation, deep overhangs, and strategic shading—complement the sustainable landscape, reducing energy needs and operational costs. Overall, Rumah Singgah goes beyond being just a retirement home. It becomes a place where aging is celebrated, nature is embraced, and residents live with comfort, care, and calm in a garden that gives back.
