NGAUT NGAJAT

NGAUT NGAJAT

Project Description

Ngaut Ngajat is a sensory-driven community space designed to preserve and reimagine the Ngajat dance tradition in a way that resonates with today’s world. This space is not just about showcasing a performance, but about experiencing the spirit, rhythm, and meaning behind the dance—through memory, interaction, and sustainability. Rooted in Iban culture, the Ngajat dance holds deep symbolic value—it represents strength, protection of family, celebration, and gratitude. Inspired by these values, this design invites both local families and international visitors to step into the past, feel the stories behind each movement, and connect with Malaysia’s cultural heritage. The spatial journey is guided by the flow of Ngajat music, forming a narrative path of six immersive zones that engage all five senses. It begins with the Prelude: Gathering the Warriors, a heritage archival space (Sound) that introduces the dance’s origins. Next is Warrior’s March, a tactile climb representing bravery and struggle (Touch). The Battle Cry follows, where visitors witness the dance on a stage with AR visual layers (Sight). Emotions build in Victory and Honor, a reflective pathway recalling the triumph and legacy of warriors (Emotion). The experience then shifts into joy and unity at the Celebration and Return Home, inspired by the Gawai Dayak festival. Finally, it concludes in the Ritual of Offering and Gratitude, a community space and reflection corner that blends all senses and invites participation (Combine). Sustainability is central to this design. Using recycled materials and natural textures reflects the Ngajat dance’s close relationship with nature, while community involvement strengthens cultural continuity. The result is a meaningful, interactive space where tradition, memory, and sustainability converge—bringing Ngajat alive for both the present and future.
